About us
The United Church of Christ was formed June 25, 1957, by the union of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and The General Council of the Congregational Christian Churches of the United States. The purpose and mission of Wider Church Ministries (WCM) shall be to encourage and support Local Churches, Associations, Conferences, and the national expressions of the United Church of Christ to participate in the global, multiracial, multicultural church, and to support United Church of Christ ministries around the world and the nation. WCM continues the work of, and acts as agent for, the following predecessor bodies: the United Church Board for World Ministries, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (founded 1812), the Board of International Missions, the Commission on World Service, and the Congregational Christian Service Committee. While a covenanted ministry of the UCC, WCM has since 1989 engaged in partnership as "Global Ministries" with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of the USA and Canada. Global Ministries is committed "to an ecumenical global sharing of resources and prophetic vision of a just and peaceful world order, joining with God?s concern for the poor and oppressed." With Global Ministries, WCM engages in global advocacy in cooperative ministry with international partners, accordind to a priority of "critical presence," which is "to timely and appropriately meet God's people and creation at the point of deepest need: spiritually, physically, emotionally, and/or economically."
