Yachay Wasi means House of Learning in Quechua, the language of the Indigenous of Peru. The motivation of Yachay Wasi was, and still is, to incite the children of the descendants of the Inkas to be proud of their heritage. Culture and spirituality of Indigenous peoples, which include caring for the environment, are the basis for Yachay Wasi's commitment. Its ongoing "Inka Challenge" against the desecration of Inka remains in the Andes led to its now active involvement in calling for protection of Sacred sites, which was emphasized by some recent panel discussions at UN Hqrs. It was the motivation for its local Conference "Sacred Sites: Biodiversity and Andean Spirituality" in the Andean village of Acopia, Peru (5-11 April 2009). Yachay Wasi is incorporated in New York State as a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt educational and cultural organization. Yachay Wasi, officially established in Cuzco, Peru in 1997, implements Indigenous information encounters and sustainable development projects based on cultural identity in the Peruvian Andes.
