Meetings and Events of ECOSOC and its Subsidiary Bodies

Joint Special Event of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) on MDGs in countries emerging from conflict

United Nations Headquarters, ECOSOC Chamber (NLB)
19 July, 2010
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

For many countries emerging from conflict, the MDGs can be powerful in promoting long-term stability by offering a coherent long-term development vision that is currently lacking. The goals represent prospects for decent education, healthcare, access to basic infrastructure, and freedom from hunger and want. At the same time, the advancement of economic growth and development and the promotion of the MDGs ¿ especially ensuring that the poorest segments of the population share in the benefits of development ¿ are essential for reducing the future incidence of violent conflict.

The Economic and Social Council has been addressing the impact of conflict on development since the late 1990s. Its ad hoc advisory groups have attempted to bring the special needs of specific countries emerging from conflict to the attention of the international community. Two of the countries previously on its agenda are now being considered by the Peacebuilding Commission. Continuing with the efforts of 2009 to strengthen the informal interaction between the two intergovernmental bodies, the President of ECOSOC and the Chair of the PBC have decided to jointly chair a meeting of the two bodies on the MDGs in countries emerging from conflict.

The joint ECOSOC-PBC meeting aims to contribute to the preparatory process of the High-level Plenary Meeting and help raise awareness on the special challenges for this group of countries in reaching the MDGs. The meeting will review the strategies that have been identified for countries affected by conflict in the seminal 2005 publication, ¿Investing in Development¿ and assess whether if they are adequate or whether new and additional policy interventions are required ¿ and, if so, which ones. The outcome of the discussion in the form of a ¿Joint Chairs¿ Summary¿ will be offered as contribution to the Co-facilitators for their consideration as elements for inclusion in the Outcome Document.
