This section provides a brief overview of ECOSOC, its subsidiary bodies and specifically tells about ECOSOC Committee on NGOs and the NGO Branch - the two main entities that provide interaction between ECOSOC and civil society. You can also find links to access additional information on these bodies.


1. Economic and Social Council
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the 6 7 principal organs of the United Nations System established by the UN Charter in 1945. It consists of 54 Members of the United Nations elected by the General Assembly.

2. ECOSOC and Its Subsidiary Bodies
There is a number of subsidiary bodies under the ECOSOC umbrella which helps to achieve the goals of the Council, and ECOSOC provides policy coherence and coordinates the overlapping functions of all its subsidiary bodies. NGOs with consultative status can participate in annual sessions and other events held by the following subsidiary bodies:

3. Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations
Interaction between ECOSOC and NGOs is supported by ECOSOC Standing Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (The Committee on NGOs)

4. NGO Branch of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs
NGO Branch of DESA is the focal point within the UN Secretariat for non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and for NGOs seeking status. The NGO Branch services the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, a subsidiary body of the ECOSOC composed of 19 Member States. It also provides relevant advice and information concerning NGOs to representatives of the United Nations system, Member States and civil society.
