The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, "Rio +20", will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 20 to 22 June 2012. The conference will be preceeded by the third Preparatory Committee meeting of the Conference from 13 to 15 June 2012. In accordance with General Assembly resolution 66/544, the pre-registration for participation in the preparatory meeting and in the Conference by relevant NGOs and other major groups is now open.

Pre-registration is now closed

Preregistration is open to:

NGOs and major groups that are currently in consultative status with ECOSOC as NGOs (including those on the roster through the list of the Commission on Sustainable Development). See ECOSOC list here.

NGOs and major groups that were accredited to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. See WSSD2002 list here.


Press "Registration - Click here" to start the preregistration process now for both the Conference and the third session of its Preparatory Committee.


Registration will close on 27 May 2012. (extended)


If your organization is NOT in either of these two categories, you needed to complete an accreditation questionnaire as a new group. The deadline for new accreditations was 20 February 2012 and has now passed. Once your registration is approved by the General Assembly, by late March 2012, your organization can preregister representatives until the general deadline of 27 May 2012 (deadline extended).

Your organization is responsible for making the necessary arrangements for your travel and accommodation, including travel within metropolitan Rio de Janeiro. Due to the large number of participants, reservations should be made well in advance. Likewise, representatives should ensure that they have adequate medical insurance prior to their arrival in Brazil.

You are also responsible for ensuring that you meet the necessary visa requirements for entry into Brazil. Representatives requiring a visa are advised to apply as early as possible to ensure adequate time for processing and travel (please note that visas issued to citizens of certain countries must be used within 90 days of the issuance date). As part of the visa application, you will be required to attach copies of your official confirmation letter to Rio+20, provided electronically upon pre-registration.

By own research, I found out that we are listed in Annex I and can hope for accreditation, but we have not heard back. So virtually there is hardly a chance to participate and to have persons registered unless the deadline 20 May will be extended. We do not even have information on what is needed for pre-registration. Especially small organisations have taken tremendous efforts (costs!!) to meet all the formal requirements and timelines, and we are talking about more than 900 institutions. Even the central information on the website or in the FAQs is not up-to-date and completely ignores this problem. This is disappointing and clearly shows the limits of participation and policy-making at global summits like this one. They are not unreasonable questions. After spending much time preparing our credentials by 20 February, we have still not heard back with only one week to go until we must register a delegation. Now we are developping the "Sustainable Enviroment Management Project" for our University Campus, located in the city of Eunápolis. This project previews the relationship between the university and the populational and social groups located around the university. We believe that the Universidade do Estado da Bahia, UNEB, can contribute to the Rio + 20 to give away a model of relationship between school and society, from the practice of environmental management, of its space and multiply environmentally correct attitudes throughout society, building a healthy planet .
