The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has the lead responsibility within the UN system for implementing the UN human rights programme. Headed by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, a position established by the General Assembly in 1993, OHCHR has a mandate to promote and protect all human rights around the world. The Office works to build awareness of and respect for human rights, empowering individuals to claim their rights and assisting States in upholding them. As part of the UN Secretariat, OHCHR is headquarted in Geneva, with a presence in New York and a network of 37 regional and country offices and human rights components of peace missions, and 18 human rights advisors at the national level, spanning five continents.Website: www.ohchr.org
