Social Policy and Development

The main objective of DESA's Division for Social Policy and Development is to strengthen international cooperation for social development, in the context of the comprehensive and detailed framework of commitments and policies for action by Governments, intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations with particular attention to the core issues of poverty eradication, employment generation and social integration.
Since the convening of the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen in 1995, the Commission for Social Development has been the key UN body in charge of the follow-up and implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action.
The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is a high-level advisory body that deals with indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, environment, education, health and human rights.
The Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is serviced by DESA, while the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is serviced by OHCHR. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is serviced by a joint Secretariat composed of the Secretariat for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, housed in DESA and OHCHR.
