Mission statement:
Year established (YYYY): 1907
Year of registration (YYYY): 1997
Organizational structure: Public Services International (PSI) is the global union federation for public sector trade unions. Founded in 1907, PSI currently represents 673 affiliated trade unions in 153 countries around the world. PSI is represented in its four regions (Africa and Arab countries; Asia-Pacific; Inter-America and Europe) by regional and sub-regional offices, with its headquarters in Ferney-Voltaire, France, on the Swiss border, close to Geneva. PSI coordinates union activity to ensure respect for workers’ rights, and defends social and economic justice through universal access to quality public services. PSI campaigns to improve the quality of public services, working with international organisations, national governments, consumer lobbies, community organisations, non-governmental organisations and unions from other sectors. PSI works closely with the International Trade Union Confederation and with other sister global unions which constitute the Council of Global Unions. PSI works actively with the International Labour Office in Geneva and participates in the annual International Labour Conference, both in the preparatory stages and during the Conference, to ensure that public sector and workers’ issues are addressed adequately.
Number and type of members: PSI has currently (December 2013) 674 affiliated unions in 153 countries and territories around the world, representing workers in the public services. Together, the affiliated unions represent more than 20 million public sector workers, providing services in central government, health and social care, municipal and community services and public water, energy and waste utilities.
Funding structure:
  • Membership fees or dues
  • Funds from other Non-Governmental Organizations
