Organizational structure: BACKGROUND OF THE INITIATIVE The 'Biodiversity in Good Company' Initiative is Germany's national Business & Biodiversity Initiative (referred to for example in COP 10 Nagoya decision X/21). In 2008, Germany hosted the 9th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In recognition of this, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety launched the Initiative with the objective to visibly engage businesses in supporting the Convention. In order to enable the Initiative to implement these objectives, it was funded by the Ministry within the scope of the German chairmanship of the CBD. When government funding was phased out in March 2011, the member companies, paying tribute to the importance of biological diversity, decided to continue and sustain the Initiative on their own and founded a new association in the summer of 2011. It is one of the few initiatives of this kind worldwide and thus serves as a role model for the CBD's efforts to encourage further business alliances. One of the challenges is that members have to pay fees now. CURRENT ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE - membership-based (private sector) - seven-member board (company representatives) - coordination office in Berlin under leadership of Managing Director Carolin Bossmeyer - members sign the Initiative's Leadership Declaration and thus commmit themselves to a process of establishing a biodiversity management structure in their company - ongoing close cooperation with German Federal Environment Ministry, supporting Germany's national strategy on biological diversity - close cooperation with the CBD Secretariat, supporting its efforts to push a global partnership - close connection to the European Commission
