Mission statement:
The Human Rights Institute at Uconn works to coordinate human rights initiatives here at the University and support faculty and students who study human rights. The Institute promotes international human rights scholarship based upon contextual and multidisciplinary research in the social sciences, humanities and law. Since 2000, the University has hosted the Marsha Lilien Gladstein Visiting Professor of Human Rights which brings leading human rights scholars to the UConn campus for one semester per year to teach and give a public lecture on key developments in the field. There are several professors who work on indigenous rights issues, from the History, Anthropology, Women's Studies, and other departments. These faculty hold joint appointments with the Human Rights Institute. UConn is also home to the Native American and Indigenous Studies program, within the the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. This programs offers a Major at one of the regional campuses and a Minor at all of the campuses. Students engage in coursework touching on the experiences of hundreds of distinct tribal nations, including archaeological explorations of the deep past, studies of colonial events, readings in literature and artistic expressions, and understandings of political relations in the present day.
