Mission statement:	The Center for Human Rights Studies at Mofid University was established in spring 2003 to coordinate and organize different academic activities of Mofid University in the field of human rights. The main mission of the Center is to conduct and commission research activities in human rights with an interdisciplinary approach, and also carry out comparative studies on human rights according to different religions and cultures. Mofid University started its major activities in the field of human rights studies by holding the first international conference on human rights. The secretariat of the conference was established in 1999 and the first conference entitled: “Human Rights and Dialogue among Civilizations” held in May 2001, the year which was titled as “the year of dialogue among civilizations” by the United Nations, in accordance with the proposal of Iranian President, Mohammad Khatami. Considering the significant achievements of that conference, the university decided to hold the same conferences every two years each time on some specific topics of human rights studies; so the secretariat of the conference had been kept and became the permanent secretariat of the international conferences. The importance of the issue of human rights and its central role in social and political relations in the world today motivated the university’s officials to conduct some serious research programs regarding different theoretical and practical aspects of human rights. At the time, these activities were concentrated in and managed by the permanent secretariat. Shortly, it was obviously felt that a firm establishment was needed to handle all those activities. Therefore, the permanent secretariat evolved into the Center for Human Rights Studies in 2003. The framework of the activities of the center may be summarized as follows. Objectives and Functions: 1)To conduct research projects; 2)To organize conferences, seminars, and periodical workshops at national, regional, and international levels; 3)To publish books and journals on relevant subjects; 4)To carry out comparative studies about country’s current rules, regulations and policies and offer proposals compatible with research findings; 5)To promote and enhance mutual academic and scientific cooperation with the other research and educational centers and collaborate with the other domestic and foreign human rights institutions; 6)To dispatch professors and researchers to participate in scientific conferences, study opportunities, and training workshops; 7)To sponsor formal training courses in different educational levels; 8)To dispatch faculty members, researchers, and students for participating in educational courses and workshops; 9)To sponsor formal training courses at different educational levels; 10)To arrange informal training courses for all those interested in the subject; 11)To build and enrich Mofid University’s Document Center and Professional Library of Human Rights as a subset of the University’s main library. Objectives: To encourage and support human rights studies in general at academic level, To promote ideas of human rights at public level, To introduce human rights issues to religious studies particularly in the Islamic seminaries, To promote comparative studies on human rights according to various religions and thought schools, To endeavor to achieve shared and deeper understanding of human rights; To develop dialogues in universities particularly in the areas in which there are shortcomings such as those regarding children and women; To affect the process of policy and law making in the country through consensus achieved in the chain of conferences held by the Center; To develop and promote religious minorities’ and children’s and women’s issues and human rights studies
