Mission statement:	Founded on January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® (AKA) is an international service organization comprised of more than 360,000 initiated members in 12 nations and territories including the United States, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Japan, Liberia, Nigeria, South Korea, South Africa and the U.S. Virgin Islands. For 117 years, the organization has aimed to: cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards; promote unity and friendship among college women; study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women worldwide in order to improve their social stature; to maintain a progressive interest in higher education; and be of “Service to All Mankind.” Based on these principles, the organization has boldly endeavored to offer public advocacy, service, and leadership on key economic, social, and political issues affecting women and minority communities across the globe. The organization is a recognized force for social action and a strong ally in the continuing struggle for civil and human rights. As Alpha Kappa Alpha has evolved over the years, it has kept in balance two very important themes: the importance of the individual and the strength of an organization of women of courage and ability.

Organizational structure:	The governing body of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) is known as the Boule and its administrative division is known as the Directorate. AKA is composed of chapters of equal rank known as graduate and undergraduate. The Boule meets biennially in the summer and is open to active and honorary members. Its 18 officers -- the International President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Parliamentarian, Regional Directors and two Undergraduate Members at Large constitute the Directorate. Designated delegates, past International Presidents, members of the Directorate, Executive Director and Deputy Director are entitled to voting privileges. The Boule shall have the power to organize, constitute, and charter chapters, both graduate and undergraduate, and have general supervision over the same; to form new regions whenever warranted by the growth of the Sorority; to make, write, compile and promulgate the ritualistic work; to hear and make decisions on all questions that are referred to it, on appeal or otherwise, for final adjudication; and in general, to do and perform every lawful act and thing necessary or expedient for efficiently conducting the business of the Sorority and its branches. The Directorate shall have the power to hear and to act upon all appeals brought before it by members, chapters or regions. It shall have the power to make recommendations to the Boule, approve the proposed program of the Boule and to submit for circulation proposed amendments to AKA Constitution and Bylaws. The Directorate has the power to conduct the business of the Sorority when the Boule is not in session. The procedure for elections is prescribed in the organization bylaws. With the exception of the International Parliamentarian and the International Regional Director (both appointed by the President), members of the Directorate are elected by plurality vote at the regular meeting of the Boule. AKA is divided geographically into ten regions (including an International Region), each of which holds an annual conference. In the year of the Boule, each Regional Conference, except the International Region, nominates a Regional Director. The Regional Conference has the power to make recommendations to the Directorate or to the Boule, and to propose amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws. Each chapter has the power to select its own members, subject to the rules and regulations of the Sorority. Each chapter shall have the power to hear and adjust matters of differences between its members, to suspend and restore members, and to recommend to the Directorate cases for expulsion. Where no settlement of differences is reached within the chapter, an appeal may be made to the Regional Director and, if necessary, to the Directorate. Each chapter has the power to make its own bylaws. These bylaws must not conflict with the Constitution and Bylaws of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
