AIDS Information Switzerland was founded in 1989 by doctors from the whole of Switzerland as a nonpolitical and nondenominational association for the benefit of the public, in order to bring doctors' viewpoints increasingly into the AIDS discussion. On the basis of its strictly scientific-orientated activities more than 600 people, predominantly doctors, dentists and pharmacists, among whom are numerous professors and senior consultants, have joined AIDS Information Switzerland. The association is additionally supported by a scientific advisory council which includes experts from the various medical fields.
The main task of AIDS Information Switzerland, which the doctors fulfill voluntarily, consists in giving information to any questions connected with AIDS. In addition to the numerous publications for specialists, AIDS Information Switzerland has also issued various booklets and leaflets for the more general public written in language accessible to all. Furthermore, there are doctors available on an advisory telephone, two times a week in the German part of Switzerland, to help with any questions on the subject of AIDS. Personal consultation is also offered on request. The association also supports children infected with HIV with a social fund.
The association is financed almost exclusively through donations. This independence from political institutions permits AIDS Information Switzerland to commit itself entirely to a scientific standpoint. This principle is also reflected in the association's guidelines for prevention, which are characterized by prudence and far-sightedness – and will endure in their essential features. |
