Social Development

Affiliation with other organizations: TEJO, since several years, is member organisation of the European Youth Forum. In this context, it aims to: - Take part in the discussions on issues pertaining to young people and their place in the future of Europe. - Contribute in particular through its international experience in youth work and its special attention to linguistic issues and language policy. - Foster active citizenship among its members, empower its activists to participate actively in society by advocating their interests. TEJO is also member of United for Intercultural Action, European Network against nationalism, racism fascism and in support of migrants and refugees.
Publications: “Kontakto” (6 issues/year): is a socio-cultural magazine to build an open space for discussion on current issues, especially those affecting young people, and to provide a neutral form of information for people facing some form of impediment. The magazine is read by young people from about 90 countries, and also its contributors come from all around the world. The magazine appears in Esperanto, to enable all our members to read it and contribute, without any discrimination regarding native language.
Purpose of the organization: TEJO is a cultural, educational organisation that works toward language equality for all. TEJO promotes international understanding through meetings, educational programmes and the use of the international language, Esperanto. The organisation defends cultural richness of language diversity, human rights of language minorities and global understanding through our network of international contacts.
Activities relevant to the conference of States Parties to the convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: The Brazilian sekcion of TEJO actively collaborates with the Cultural Cooperative of Esperantists (Cooperativa Cultural dos Esperantistas - KKE), whose objectives are to strengthen the culture of Cooperativism among its members and esperantists and to promote the broad use of Esperanto by Cooperatives. KKE works since 1951 publishing many books, CDs and DVDs. It also teaches Esperanto courses for free and organizes the campaign “Esperanto in libraries”, by sending free books and magazines to many public libraries in Brazil and in other countries. Since 2001, it has donated more than 1000 books about Esperanto. KKE is situated in Rio de Janeiro and has aproximately 200 members.
Confirmation of the activities of the organization at the regional, national or international level: International Youth Congress: This is TEJO's biggest annual event involving hundreds of young Esperantists from all over the world. For a week, the participants attend a rich program: conferences, workshops and discussion groups focusing on various aspects of youth activity and youth matters, articulated by the Congress' theme. In addition, the program consists of cultural activities (courses of the languages spoken in the region and excursions for those who wish to learn more about the host country) and leisure activities (sport competitions, concerts, quizzes, educational games, etc.). Since 1938 TEJO has organised 67 Congresses in different parts of the World. In 2009 the Congress was held in the town of Liberec (Czech Republic), with the notion of freedom as central thread; in 2010 it took place in Santa Cruz del Norte (Cuba), where the theme of cultural globalisation was widely discussed. In 2011 it was held in Kiev (Ukraine) and the topic was sustainable development. Other international meetings: TEJO has 3 traditional week-long festivals held each year in the following countries: Germany/Poland (Youth New-Year's Week), Italy (International Youth Festival) and Hungary (International Youth Week). The meetings' activities are focused on pre-chosen topics, usually international issues concerning today's youth such as globalisation and localism, European identity, active citizenship, volunteering, cultural diversity, inclusion and rights, etc. An Art and Culture Festival is held biennially in Denmark, dedicated to providing a venue for artists to express themselves and for participants to take an active role in the exploration of creativity. Another important cultural event, held in France in August, consists of a music festival which alternates a variety of performances by Esperanto musicians and local groups. Language Festivals: The aim of these events is to show the variety of the world's languages and to spread the attitude of appreciating diversity and respecting all the languages and cultures equally, whether they are big or small, majority or minority. During our Language Festivals, everyone has an opportunity to present their language and culture and share it with the others. In 2009, TEJO managed to organise successful Language Festivals in several places: Bialystok (Poland), Liberec (Czech Republic), Liptovský Mikuláš (Slovak Republic), Biedenkopf (Germany), Helsingör (Denmark), Leuven (Belgium), Cheboksary (Russia), and Yalta (Ukraine). Committee meetings: These are TEJO's statutory meetings, during which the results of TEJO's activities are evaluated, the priorities of the organisation are discussed and work plans are elaborated. Training and seminars: TEJO organises seminars on many different topics such as language rights, intercultural education and Internet technologies. Publications: Appearing as a supplement of the magazine Kontakto, "TEJO-Tutmonde" is the organisation's bulletin which includes articles and reports on its activities and those of the national member organisations.
