The Acronym Institute for Disarmament Diplomacy is a non-profit educational company 'limited by guarantee', registered in England and Wales in 1996, No. 3149465. The work of the Acronym Institute is carried out by a small staff team and overseen by an international Board of Directors. The Executive Director of the Acronym Institute, Dr Rebecca Johnson, holds a PhD in international relations and diplomacy from the London School of Economics, an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and a BSc (Hons) from the University of Bristol. Dr Johnson serves on the advisory bodies of various international and UK-based security, arms control and women's organisations, including Mayors for Peace, the Middle Powers Initiative and IANSA Women's Group. She is the Vice President of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and was formerly senior advisor to the international Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission and a Vice Chair of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists' Board. A prolific writer and analyst on international disarmament and security issues her latest book, "Unfinished Business", which chronicled the campaigning and negotiations to achieve a CTBT, was published by the United Nations in May 2009. The Acronym Institute's Board of Directors is made up of experts in the fields of disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation as well as diplomacy, international relations and international law. Board members contribute to the work of the organisation via their input at regular Board meetings and by their involvement in specific Acronym projects as appropriate. Currently, our Board of Directors consists of: David Atwood, Director, Quaker United Nations Office (QUNO) Nomi Bar-Yaacov, Middle East Foreign Policy Advisor General Sir Hugh Beach (retired) Professor Christine Chinkin, Professor of International Law at London School of Economics (LSE) Tim Caughley, former New Zealand diplomat and Director, United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs (Geneva branch), Lord Ramsbotham, (retired UK General, now House of Lords). General Sir Hugh Beach is the current Chair. Whilst we maintain a formal headquarters in London, in order to maximise our resources, we encourage staff and consultants to work from home. This 'virtual' structure provides a cost-effective use of resources by releasing overheads and administrative resources to enable us to maximize our substantive work. It also supports our equal opportunities policy by enhancing flexibility and facilitating positive working conditions for parents with young children and people with disabilities involving impaired mobility. |
