Since obtaining consultative status with the ECOSOC of the United Nations, CEFC has been actively participating in the activities and related conferences organized by ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies. With respect to the areas of concern to ECOSOC and global issues of strategic importance, such as energy, social development, and regional economic cooperation, CEFC is committed to provide distinct information and will try to sponsor related activities. ********************************************************************************************************* [A CHINA STORY: FORUM ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND GOVERNANCE] (Apr 16, 2013) - UN Headquarters, NYC - This forum explored the models of national development and how a developing country like China coped with various global crises in recent years. Supporting the United Nations' efforts to serve as the multi-stakeholder platform to undertake the broad-based consultations required, the Forum was scheduled the day immediately following the official thematic debate on "United Nations and Global Economic Governance"(April 15) hosted by the President of the General Assembly. The initiative was also a response to the enthusiasm of the international society in learning more about the progress of China, and the direction the new leadership might take. CEFC invited a group of erudite Chinese thinkers to give their interpretation of China’s overall planning approach that covers economic, political, cultural, social and ecological development. Speakers include Professor Cheng Siwei, the Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Ninth and Tenth National People’s Congresses; Professor Qu Xing, President of China Institute of International Studies; and Professor Yao Zhizhong, Assistant Director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; and Deputy Chairman and Secretary General, China Energy Fund Committee, Prof. HO, C.P. China Energy Fund Committee (CEFC) is a nongovernmental, nonpartisan, not-for-profit, Chinese think-tank registered in Hong Kong. We aim to promote international cooperation and mutual respect through public diplomacy. We believe an enhanced understanding of one another’s historic legacy and cultural values would lead to a more accurate interpretation of our respective actions. |

[HOST LUNCHEON TALK FOR UN UNDER-SECRETARY WU HONGBO] (Mar 18, 2013) - Hong Kong - Mr. Wu Hongbo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, gave an illuminating address on the positive role of the UN when speaking at a salon organized by CEFC. His address drew warm applause from an audience of about 200 comprising senior representatives of consular offices and NGOs in Hong Kong, prominent officials, and business and community leaders. In particular, Mr. Wu highlighted the work of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), illustrating how it maintains global peace and security, provides emergency aid, fights poverty, promotes human rights, advances women's and children's health, and protects the environment. He also spoke of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) and its follow-up tasks. ********************************************************************************************************* [HOST LUNCHEON TALK FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY] - Hong Kong - On Dec 29, 2013, President of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly S.E.M. Vuk Jeremic delivered a speech at a salon luncheon hosted by the CEFC. Earlier that week, he became the first foreign dignitary to meet with Xi Jinping since Xi’s election as the next General Secretary of the Communist Party of China. At the salon, Mr Jeremic praised China’s remarkable achievements in the last 20 years which he said would take other countries two centuries to accomplish. He believes that under the new leadership, China will complete the building of a moderately prosperous and harmonious society in all aspects, as well as further contribute to strengthening the international system. He predicts that China would achieve great advancements in renewable energy technologies in the near future. ********************************************************************************************************* [NEW YORK FORUM ON WORLD CIVILIZATIONS] (Nov 10-11, 2012) - UN Headquarters, NYC - The two-day event was an unusual opportunity for religious leaders and experts from different nations to speak up and discuss the key relevance of Confucianism and Christianity in our modern age. The theme was "Harmony Based on Shared Values - Beyond National Identities and Beliefs: Dialogue between Confucianism and Christianity". Over 20 leading Western and Chinese scholars addressed the forum, including Prof. XU, Jialu, Vice Chairman of the Ninth and Tenth Standing Committees of the National People’s Congress (NPC), who delivered its keynote speech; and Cardinal McCARRICK, Theodore E., Archbishop Emeritus of Washington. The occasion marked the first time that a Chinese think tank was allowed to host an event of this kind at the UN Headquarters. Mr. WU, Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, congratulated CEFC in a written speech. [RECEPTION TO CELEBRATE SUCCESS OF FORUM] Following the Forum, CEFC hosted a reception at the Metropolitan Opera House to celebrate the successful completion of the event. Over 200 dignitaries of various nationalities attended the event, including S.E.M. Vuk Jeremic, the President of the 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly; Prof. XU, Jialu, Vice-chairman of the 9th & 10th National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee; Admiral Bob INMAN, former Deputy Director of CIA and US National Security Agency; Ambassador WANG Min, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations; Mr. SUN, Guoxiang, Consul General Of China, and permanent representatives of other countries to the United Nations also attended. During the reception, S.E.M. CEFC established five offices (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Washington D.C., and Ottawa), and four committees (Academic Research, Foreign Affairs, Energy Research, Cultural Affairs). Other organizations which are fully sponsored and supported by CEFC include: Huaxin Research Center For Energy; Institute For Maritime Technology; China Think Tank Alliance; China-US Energy Cooperation Organization; International Energy Research Center; Jiangsu-Huaxin Strategic Research Center; and Chinese Cultural Center. There are around 500 advisors in CEFC. |
