Social Development
Affiliation with other organizations: | Each year, APPA participates in the UN's International Day of Peace, an activity approved by the UN Assembly. Since 2005, APPA's Executive Director Reverend Sang-Jin Choi has served as GCS International's representative to the UN. In addition APPA, in partnership with GCS International and MCC (Mennonite Central Committee - ECOSOC member) provides disaster relief and sends materials to North Korea, Pakistan, Haiti, etc. Also, APPA cooperated with WEF (World Energy Forum) on UN Water Day 2011 to organize a concert to raise relief funds for the earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan. Annually, APPA works with WEF to host water-issues related seminars and workshops for youth. |
Publications: | "Peace Times" is currently a quarterly publication, first published in 1999. Previously, it was a bi-weekly tabloid newspaper focused on issues of ending poverty and homelessness, and racial reconciliation. Another publication, "Peacebuilders," is a quarterly newsletter first published in 2005, reporting APPA's involvement in UN activities concerning youth. APPA also has published since 2008 "DPI/NGO Conference Report" to inform APPA members of APPA's participation in UN conferences. |

Purpose of the organization: | The APPA seeks to end homelessness; encourage racial harmony; and develop the community in low-income areas. |
Activities relevant to the conference of States Parties to the convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: | For the past 13 years, the APPA has served the legal needs of people who are homeless and those with disabilities, through legal advocates/lawyers. Currently, APPA hosts a monthly legal clinic in Washington, DC through Christian Legal Aid. APPA also provides emergency food distribution, clothing distribution, child care programs, and counseling for homeless and low-income community members. Additionally, APPA runs a Center for Racial Conflict Resolution that researches, trains community member in, and intervenes to resolve racial conflict. |
Confirmation of the activities of the organization at the regional, national or international level: | UN International Day of Peace; UN Annual DPI/NGO Conference; UN International Mother Earth Day; and CONGO. Each year on the Day of D.C. Green Peace, APPA plants flowers in impoverished regions in D.C. and the vicinity. Several hundred volunteers help, bringing and planting flowers. |
