| Activities relevant to the conference of States Parties to the convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: | (i) As a part of DRG, we have been involved with several advocacy campaigns that have led to the realization of the rights of persons with disabilities on several counts. Some of the campaigns of DRG that we have been part of are: · 2006-07: Advocacy towards including a chapter on disability in the 11th Five Year Plan. · 2009: Advocacy towards the inclusion of children with disabilities in the Right to Education Act. · 2009-2010: Advocacy towards convincing the Government of India to go in for a new disability law based on UNCRPD. As a result of this advocacy, the Govt. of India finally formed a Committee in April 2010 to draft a new law. We were also involved in the campaign which led to the inclusion of people with disabilities in the committee. (ii) We have participated in a National meeting for the amendment of on Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995 in 2007 at the India Habitat Center, New Delhi. (iii) We have organized the National Paralympic Table Tennis Championship continuously from 2007 to 2009 in New Delhi, 2010 to 2012 in Ghaziabad, UP, and 2014 in New Delhi with collaboration with Indian Para Table Tennis Federation. (iv) Association for Disabled People has been working on the Accessible India Campaign. ADP is the empanelled organization to do Access Audits. Our NGO has conducted Access Audits of more than 350 buildings across the country. Now we strive to work for the implementation of Access Audits reports. (v) We have worked as a promoter and organizer of paralympic Sports in India since 2006. We have also played our part to root out corruption from disability sports in India and ensuring the rights of disabled sportspersons. The campaign which started in 2009, finally led to the derecognizing of the corrupt Paralympics Committee of India body in 2011. But this did not come easy. It involved several rallies, writing letters, filing requests for information under the Right to Information Act, maintaining the pressure on the Ministry of Sports and the Paralympics sports body, liaising with the Government over more than 2 years. This advocacy also ensured the participation of genuinely disabled sportspersons in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010. (vi) We have been involved in the advocacy for the participation of deserving disabled sportspersons in the London Paralympics 2012, while still keeping a vigil on the Paralympics sports body. We filed an RTI against PCI in 2009 and helped 227 sportspersons to participate in IWAS World Games 2009. (vii) We have requested any RTIs in favor of the people of the PWD community to know what exact benefits are being offered by Government to them and how we can get them. Our efforts have made a huge difference in the lives of many persons with disabilities. |
