28 - 30 January, 2009

The Workshop will bring together senior government policy makers, representatives of local authorities, officials from the United Nations system, researchers and experts, as well as practitioners, to share lessons learned and best practices in combating rural poverty.

The workshop is being organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA/DSD) in collaboration with the UN-Water Decade Programme on Capacity Development (UNW-DPC) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

The workshop will provide an opportunity for strengthening technical and institutional capacity of key government institutions and policy makers in developing and implementing sustainable agriculture, rural development and irrigation water management policies with specific thrust on rural poverty reduction. Specific workshop objectives include:

(i) Assessment of the effectiveness of existing national policies and strategies on rural development, irrigation water management and agriculture development in reducing rural poverty;
(ii) Identification of interventions and adjustments needed in the existing policies and strategies to promote sustainable agriculture, including irrigation management and rural development;
(iii) Raising awareness that interventions in non-farm sector are important to address rural poverty.

The outcomes of the workshop will serve as important inputs to the deliberations of the Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting of 17th session of the CSD in 2009. More details, which are continuously being updated, are available accessing the documents below:
