Sixty-fifth session of the United Nations General Assembly

The General Assembly of the United Nations opens its sixty-fifth session on 14 September at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Following the opening week, Heads of State and Government will gather for a three-day Highlevel Plenary Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG Summit), from 20 to 22 September.

The annual general debate, which traditionally features statements by Heads of State and
Government as well as Ministers, will begin on Thursday, 23 September and conclude on 30
September.

Among key issues, the Assembly will address the following:

╗╗ Millennium Development Goals, including follow-up to the MDG Summit (20 to 22 September 2010);
╗╗ Climate change;
╗╗ Food security;
╗╗ Reconstruction and strengthening of fragile and post-conflict states;
╗╗ Disarmament;
╗╗ United Nations reform, including Security Council reform and the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly, as well as a review of the Peacebuilding Commission and the Human Rights Council.

Several other major events will be featured during the sixty-fifth session, which runs through mid-September 2011. On 22 September 2010 there will be a high-level meeting in support of the International Year of Biodiversity. (For further information, go to http://www.un.org/

Later that week, from 24 to 25 September, the Assembly will hold a high-level review to assess progress made in addressing the vulnerabilities of small island developing States through implementation of the Mauritius Strategy, which deals with the unique development problems of this vulnerable group of countries, in such areas as environmental management, transport, trade and sustainable development.

Later in the year, on 14 December, a commemorative meeting will be held on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Assembly┐s landmark Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples. Prior to that, consultations will take place in preparation for the Assembly┐s 2011 review of progress in achieving the goals of the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS.
