Mission statement:
Our core principles • Every human being deserves a decent standard of living in dignity; of course this cannot be an automatic right but should result from human cooperation, proper organization and universal contributions. • Every individual – and par excellence those involved in the affairs of the commons, such as politicians, civil servants, religious leaders, intellectuals and the press – has to abide by the highest standards of personal integrity. • Human life is unique and has to be valued and lived to the fullest, creatively and constructively. • The human being has unlimited potential, which s/he should be able to realize in an environment that promotes equal opportunities and guarantees justice. Areas of focus of our activities We live in a globalized world, which is tightly interconnected in terms of trade, financial and communication flows. Large parts of humanity have been pulled out of poverty, through intense economic activity, especially in Asia. Still huge numbers of people are suffering from lack of essentials like food, water and energy. At the same time, the West that developed globalization and benefitted from it for centuries is now losing ground with unforeseen consequences. In this context, the activities of the Foundation, including its publications, conferences and its broader outreach, focus on big global questions such as the following (the list is not exhaustive): a. How can the global economy be transformed to serve human well-being and preserve the planet? This strand of activity of the Foundation focuses on the merits and shortcoming of the prevailing economic model, with proposals for additional or alternative models of organizing today’s globalized economy. b. How can global governance be redesigned to ensure an effective response to the global challenges of today? This strand of activity of the Foundation focuses on the need to adjust the institutional arrangements at the local and regional level, in order to address the long-term challenges that face humanity, from peace and security to sustainable development and climate change.
