Mission statement:
The Africa MNCH Coalition was set up following extensive deliberations at the AU July 2010 Pre-Summit Conference. At the conference, Civil Society participants concluded that the absence of such a coalition in the 10 years prior has undermined effective implementation of RMNCH policies in Africa. The major objectives of the Africa MNCH Coalition are to ensure effective Africa regional and in-country RMNCH work, including advocacy for implementation of regional and global MNCH policies; and to facilitate longer term sustainable RMNCH development, by building African CS capacity to engage policy makers with evidence based advocacy. In view of its strong MNCH work and overall advocacy on health policy and financing, Afri-Dev was recommended and accepted to host the secretariat of the MNCH Coalition. The work of the secretariat includes: developing and coordinating regional and in country advocacy by African stakeholders; and engagement of regional institutions and policy makers. Although an outcome of AU Summit consultations, the Africa MNCH coalition is designed to be independent – as underlined by the hosting of its secretariat by Afri-Dev. Highlights of the MNCH Coalitions recent work include playing a lead role in development of the mile stone 2011 Africa Integrated RMNCH Advocacy Strategy, which aligns global and African MNCH initiatives and frameworks, and promotes inter-sectoral engagement of health and non-health sectors that impact on RMNCH. The MNCH Coalition is also a member of the Africa MNCH Taskforce set up by the 2010 AU Summit to ensure accountability and prioritisation of MNCH policies on the continent
