Mission statement:
Understanding life on Earth and how to sustain it is a fundamental challenge of our time. Since 1993, the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC) at the American Museum of Natural History has been transforming knowledge into conservation action through pioneering multidisciplinary collaborative research, capacity development, and by convening and connecting key actors. Our mission is to mitigate critical threats to global biological and cultural diversity by: • advancing scientific research on diverse species and critical ecosystems; • strengthening the application of science to conservation practice and public policy; • developing professional, institutional and community capacity; and • heighten public understanding and stewardship of biodiversity. The CBC’s broad range of programs leverages the Museum’s science, collections, and technology, as well as its convening power, and fosters the ongoing discovery, awareness, and conservation of life on this planet. The CBC is committed to the following principles to guide programmatic choices and enhance our effectiveness. These principles have guided our choice of goals, strategies, and actions for 2018-2020. • We draw on multiple perspectives, strands of knowledge, and ways of knowing, and engage diverse communities of expertise when approaching complex conservation challenges, to foster systems thinking and local networks to address biodiversity threats. • We focus on partner with local leaders, such as managers and educators, maximizing the effect of training and other capacity development efforts, and providing a foundation for ongoing conservation activities. • We convene strategic partnerships with local, national, and international organizations that target professionals, policy-makers, stakeholders, and the general public. • We promote open access resources that foster local stakeholder ownership of knowledge and action. • We develop community-based resource stewardship to foster solutions that are environmentally and culturally relevant and appropriate. • We commit to the full life cycle of conservation action from engaging partners and identifying needs and issues, to research, dissemination, and monitoring results that identify impact and further directions. • We advance diversity, inclusion, and equity in the field of conservation towards a culturally vibrant conservation workforce
