PAN-Ethiopia¿s goal is to enhance and promote safe and sustainable environment protected from harm posed by hazardous substances (create a toxic free future) by promoting close collaboration of NGOs, Government organizations, interested groups and urban and rural communities for improved and improved livelihoods to ensure sustainable development in Ethiopian and Africa at large. PAN-Ethiopia aims to achieve its long term goal (toxic free future) by working hand in-hand with partners to: ¿ Promote shared responsibility and cooperation in environmental management to the realization of food security and sustainable development in general. ¿ Provide capacity building at different levels regarding the impacts of chemicals on the environment and the consequence on livelihoods. ¿ Conduct research on the public health and environmental impacts of toxic substances pesticides to the public and the environment at large. ¿ Prepare public forums (media, information education materials), panel discussions, seminars, School environmental clubs etc ¿ Contribute towards Good Agricultural Practices at grass root levels ¿ Participate and contribute in International and National conferences/ workshops to share experiences ¿ Advocate and contribute towards introduction and implantation of policies and strategies to protect the environment and enhance food security Recent studies show that Ethiopia has been considered as having the largest accumulations of obsolete pesticides in the whole of Africa. It was estimated that there were 402 stores at 250 sites containing 1,500 tones of obsolete pesticides. This estimate does not include the massive but unquantifiable amounts of pesticides soaked in soils. Nor does it include contaminated building materials, pallets, shipping containers and other miscellaneous items. Now the government and international agencies (FAO, World Bank) the Governments of Sweden, USA, Belgium, The Netherlands, Finland have contributed to clear obsolete pesticide through allocating huge amount of funds. The Pesticide Action Nexus Association of (PAN-Ethiopia) was established to prevent further accumulation of hazardous pesticides and other chemical and electronic wastes (e-wastes). Pesticide Action Nexus (PAN) Ethiopia has been and is working in development partnership with the Ethiopian government, to contribute to the eradication of poverty and create a toxic free future in Ethiopia by raising the awareness of the public in order to prevent the public health and environmental impacts of chemical pesticides and other hazardous chemicals
