BHI has a main office in Pittsburgh, PA (registered in 2014) and an in-country office in El Salvador (registered in 2010). Each office is staffed by at least two personnel in addition to a growing cadre of doctors, nurses and health promoters trained by BHI. BHI has a Board of Directors and follows all operational procedures for 501(c)3 organizations in the U.S. Dr. Miriam Cremer is the President and Founder of Basic Health International. In 1997, while still a medical student, Dr. Cremer completed a clinical rotation in rural El Salvador where she noticed the high prevalence of cervical cancer among rural women. According to the WHO, a woman dies of cervical cancer worldwide every two minutes and cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women in the developing world. This prompted Dr. Cremer to develop outreach health campaigns over the following years, and to establish Basic Health International. Dr. Cremer serves as the chief medical adviser to the team and oversees all aspects of patient care. In addition to her dedication to Basic Health, Dr. Cremer is also a physician at Cleveland Clinic. She is a board certified obstetrician and gynecologist who completed her fellowship in family planning at the University of Southern California in 2005. She has received multiple grants and awards for public health projects both nationally and internationally. Her specific research interests include cervical cancer screening, adolescent comprehension of emergency contraception and improving contraceptive services worldwide. Dr. Cremer received her Bachelor of Arts from Hampshire College, her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, and her Master of Public Health from John Hopkins University. In addition, she holds clinical commitments at Cleveland Clinic, where she teaches in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. |
