The Association has three main policy-making organs - Members Assembly, Board of Directors, Executive Committee.
The Members Assembly which is the ultimate policy organ of the Association meets every two years, to review annual activity reports and actions taken on recommendations from the Board of Directors concerning membership, budget and program activities.
The functions of the Board of Directors which meets twice a year include the approval of work plans, examination and approval of procedure manuals prepared for the proper management of the Association, as well as the programme's financial reports and audited accounts. The Board comprises twelve (12) highly respected environmental and natural resources professionals and experts from government, non-governmental and the private sector. They are identified and selected as much as possible from the main Eco-regions of Africa (Sahel West Africa, Tropical West Africa, Congo Basin, Lake Victoria Basin, Horn of Africa, North Africa and Southern Africa and the Islands). The Board provides policy and overall management guidance to the Network.
The Executive Committee consists of four (4) members from the Board of Directors. Its role is to assist the Secretariat in decision-making on urgent policy matters arising from the day-to-day management of the organisation.
In addition to the three main policy organs of NESDA, there is an International Advisory Committee. Members of the Committee are selected irrespective of their countries of origin and are not necessarily members of the NESDA but persons with international expertise or reputation who can serve the objectives, and enhance the development of the organisation. Its role is to assist the Association in an advisory capacity, to resolve specific problems which it may face, to assist in fund-raising and other international representation and, with the Secretariat, to encourage "Friends of NESDA" group for individuals who are qualified as members.
The role and responsibilities of these various policy-making bodies are clearly defined in the Constitution and By-laws.
The secretariat
The NESDA Secretariat comprises a small but flexible team headed by a Co-ordinator. The role of the Secretariat is to co-ordinate the implementation of the Network's program and to maintain effective Networking and cordial relationship between the Membership. It is responsible for the day-to-day management of the organisation. |
