Founded in 2008 by business entrepreneur Jochen Zeitz, the Zeitz Foundation is a non-profit organization registered in Germany, headquartered in Kenya, and with representation in the US and the UK. The board consisting of the founder Jochen Zeitz, governs the overall working of the Foundation.
The Executive Director oversees the running of the Foundations activities in Kenya and Internationally. Reporting to the ED are: Administration, Fundraising, The Long Run Initiative, The Segera Programme and Communications. Each of those functions has a head of department with at least one person assisting in them. |

The Long Run Initiative is the Zeitz Foundation’s flagship programme, built around Long Run Supporters; Long Run Alliance Members; and Long Run Destinations.
As part of this global initiative the Zeitz Foundation currently has nine Long Run Destinations which are are leaders in sustainable development and locations around the world that work on sustainable, mostly tourism-driven enterprises, whilst fostering community development and cultural stewardship, and have undergone all the steps of the rigorous Global Ecosphere Retreats® (GER) certification process that verifies actions in the 4Cs. These include: Chumbe Island Coral Park Tanzania, Monte Azul and Lapa Rios in Costa Rica, Caiman Ecological Refuge in Brazil, Wolwedans in Namibia, Wanas in Sweden, Nihiwatu in Indonesia and Segera in Kenya.
Moreover, the Long Run Initiative also has fifteen Long Run Alliance Members which are institutions that directly manage or significantly influence the management of a natural area of conservation value with defined geographical boundaries that are committed to achieving sustainability through a holistic balance of the4Cs: conservation, community, culture and commerce. These includeVista Alegre in Brazil, Spannoccia in Italy, DumaTau and Mombo Camps in Botswana; Huaorani Ecolodge in Ecuador; Nkwichi Lodge in Mozambique; Toka Leya Camp in Zambia; Pacuare Lodge in Costa Rica; Campi ya Kanzi, Cottar's Camp and Lemarti's Camp in Kenya; NIROX Foundation and Grootbos Nature Reserve in South Africa, Heritance Kandalama in Sri Lanka and Comrie Croft in Scotland.
Finally the Long Run Initiative also has nine Long Run Supporters which are organizations that share the Zeitz Foundation’s drive to support sustainable, ecologically and socially responsible projects around the world, and have demonstrated their commitment by signing the Long Run Charter, a declaration of intent and commitment to promote more sustainable lifestyle choices to build a better future. These include: - and six new Long Run Supporters (LRSs) - PPR, Wilderness Holdings, PITCH_Africa, UniquEco, Atopia Research, Green Destinations, Earthmind, WAPONI and SIX SENSES. |
