Mission statement:
PCJ Consortium is an association of private non-profit organizations composed of cities and companies, whose mission is to recover the water sources of its area of coverage. The base of the organization's work lies in the awareness of all sectors of society about the problems of the region's water resources, planning and promoting the recovery actions of the water sources.Founded on October 13, 1989, the Consortium works with technical and financial independence. The organization collects and applies resources in 13 environmental programs:Program for Watershed Management, Environmental Education Program, Program on Institutional Cooperation, Program for Regional Integration, Support Program to Consortium Members, Solid Waste Program, Water Sources Protection Program, Program for Rationalization, Prevention of Losses and Sanitation Program, Group of Companies Program, Management and Partnerships Program, Social Communication Program, Program for Water Agency and Collection of Water Resources, Planning and Sustainability Program. The PCJ Consortium promotes the management of water resources to overcome personal and political-partisan differences, peculiar to inter municipal articulations and between segments. The integration of municipalities and companies and the search for global solutions have marked its performance. The purpose of the organization is to contribute to the implementation of decentralized management of water resources and develop partnerships with public and private entities, projects and practical actions aimed at restoring and preserving the river basins of the PCI in order to guarantee economic and sustainable regional development. The performance area is the basin of the Piracicaba, Capivari and Jundiaí rivers, located in the main portion of the State of São Paulo (58 municipalities), and Minas Gerais (4 municipalities). With an area of 15,304km2 and a population of more than 5 million inhabitants, the region is considered one of the most important in Brazil due to its economic development, which represents about 5% of GDP.The PCJ Consortium began in 1989 and has since then won major advances in the management of water resources in the region, promoting regional integration, environmental awareness and the activities for preservation and restoration of water resources of river basins Piracicaba, Capivari and Jundiaí.The PCJ Consortium pays great attention to the awareness of regional leaders and the organized society on the importance of proper management of water in the line of "Planning, Promotion and Awareness." In its 20 years of work, it uses as its main work tool the regional organization to prevent water shortages, contributing with amendments to all bills on water resources (at state and national levels), contingency plans for seasonal crises, environmental education courses and management training, national and international partnerships and cooperation, development of pilot experiences in water resources management for the benefit of consortium members and the watershed in general. The PCJ Consortium was crucial for a series of regional achievements, consolidating itself as a nonpartisan organization, working in an articulated and integrated manner toward a system of water management that became a model for other river basins in Brazil. In two decades of existence, the Consortium was fundamental for the work of implementing the management tools provided in the National Water Resources, joining the public, private sectors and civil society. Among the main achievements of the PCJ Consortium, we can highlight the regional awareness of environmental problems, particularly in relation to water resources, master plans and designs of sewage treatment systems in over 20 cities, contributing to the increased rate of treatment of domestic sewage from 3% to 45%, development of Environmental Education - Water Week, involving more than 4 million agents.
