  • Mission statement:
    Year established:
    Year of registration: 2011
Organizational structure: GAIA is an international alliance that works both against incinerators and for safe, sustainable and just alternatives. Our name reflects this dual purpose: The Global Anti-Incinerator Alliance: Mobilizing grassroots action against the spread of incinerators and other polluting, end-of-pipe waste technologies. The Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives: Building the movement for environmental justice, local green economies, and creative zero waste solutions. Our members work together in a variety of ways. We share information online and in regional meetings, conduct coordinated campaigns toward common goals, strategize together by participating in international trainings and skillshares, and provide a community of support for each other. Our strategies are varied and adaptable. We provide technical assistance and strategic campaign advice to members, as well as opportunities for exchange, information resources, and other tools for mobilization in support of positive action in communities around the world. We also encourage advocacy efforts to stop the expansion of the incinerator industry, and support collective action and education campaigns through focused mini-grants and publications. GAIA's alliance also promotes the development of regional/thematic strategies and globally-coordinated campaigns around issues of cross-border concern. GAIA's Zero Waste for Zero Warming campaign, for example, is advancing safe and effective solutions to the global waste, energy and climate crisis.
Number and type of members: GAIA continuously works for a just, toxic-free world without incineration with the help of more than 690 grassroots organizations and individuals in over 93 countries. For individuals and activists engaged in the issue, there are at least two clearly demarcated fronts on which our members get involved - Continuing to close incinerators, landfills, and other end-of-pipe technologies AND - promoting Environmentally-safe solutions such as the implementation of Zero Waste.
    Funding structure:
  • Donations and grants from domestic sources
