Organizational structure: The Rainforest Fund, Incorporated (RFUND) is a non-profit organization based in New York with international partners, projects and interests. The organization jointly known as the Rainforest Foundation began in 1989 and currently consists of RFUND; Rainforest Foundation US (RFUS); Rainforest Foundation Norway (RFN); and Rainforest Foundation UK (RFUK). RFUND’s organizational structure can be understood as both vertically and horizontally integrated. Consisting of a Board of Directors with 6 members; one part-time employee, a financial director; and, one full-time employee, a program and development officer. The organization has remained small in its administrative structure in order to devote as much funding as possible to its projects in the field. The Board makes the final decisions about projects that will be accepted and funded; direction of the organization and overall management. The Chair of the Board works collaboratively and directionally with RFUND employees on an everyday basis regarding projects, development and budgets. The financial director administers, tracks, assesses and advises funding and budgeting. The program and development officer expands the reach of the RFUND through communication, events, collaboration with partners, as well as works under the Chair as a project evaluator. RFUND receives project proposals from its partners including RFUS, RFUK, RFN and local Indigenous organizations throughout the rainforests to fund activities that strengthen Indigenous and traditional populations’ abilities to protect their lands and human rights. RFUS focuses its areas of work in Latin America; RFUK focuses on Africa; and, RFN works primarily in Asia. RFUND has independent partners that are not associated with the three Rainforest Foundations. Each partnering organization has its own unique organizational structure and methods of operation.
