YOUTH RISE NETWORK DESCRIPTION AND GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE Youth RISE is an international youth-led network advocating for evidence-based drug policies and harm reduction approaches for young people. Our network members include young people (under 30 years) who use drugs and young people interested in drug policy reform. Through our network structure, Youth RISE empowers and gives a voice to young people affected by drug policy and young people who use drugs better informing advocacy efforts for policies that are based on real experiences, with an overall aim to ensure that policies effectively mitigate harms and improve the overall health and wellbeing of young people. Youth RISE was officially launched as a global network of volunteers in 2007. The network now consists of two staff members based in London and Australia that coordinate the network, an International Working Group (IWG) of 10-14 members and a global membership throughout Asia, Europe, North/Latin America, Central Asia and the Middle East. Our main activities involve youth engagement in drug policy reform and harm reduction, international, regional and national advocacy, capacity building, peer education training, resource development, and development and support of national groups/organisations. The Youth RISE network consists of several bodies that each plays a specific and important role, and which allows Youth RISE to have a broad and inclusive reach. The network structure consists of the following bodies: Board of Directors: Our Board of Directors was formally established in 2011. Our Board reserves two places for young people and/or former staff or IWG members of Youth RISE. Secretariat: There are currently two staff members (Executive Director and Operations Coordinator) based in London and Australia that carry out the overall coordination of the network. International Working Group (IWG): There are currently 14 IWG members who are under the age of 30 and have different areas of expertise and experiences. The IWG is comprised of current or former drug users (approximately 80%). They are located in different regions around the world and provide strategic direction and regional representation for the network, and include representatives of national Youth RISE affiliated organisations. In January of each calendar year, 50% of the IWG rotate off and new members are recruited. The IWG have an important role in driving the work-plan of the network and has a key role in the networks decision-making process. Network members: The Youth RISE network is comprised of young members from around the world, aged between 14-29 years old and who are supportive of Youth RISE’s mission and goals. A vital element of the Youth RISE network is young people who identify themselves as active drug users and who have been directly impacted by drug policies and much of the network is comprised of current drug users or former drug users. Youth RISE’s network is also comprised of young people who are interested in drug policy reform and harm reduction and would like to be more involved in advocacy efforts around these issues. |
