Mission statement:	DIFFERENZA DONNA was established in Rome on the 6th of May 1989, with the mission of spreading into society an overall gender culture and particularly of bringing to light, understanding, combating, preventing violence and all social problems affecting women’s lives. By moving from theory to practice, the organization conceived the project of establishing Shelters in Italy for women in difficult circumstances or experiencing domestic and all forms of violence. Since the beginning it was plain that the expertise of different professions was needed for effectively combating discrimination: psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, medical doctors, educators, lawyers, sociologists, anthropologists, media professionals, computer experts. Over the years Differenza Donna’s projects have found endorsement, support and financing both at the national and international level. Several central and local bodies have recognized the professionalism and capacity of the organization, at the national level: the Ministry of Equal Opportunity, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Welfare, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Municipality of Rome, Province of Rome, Lazio Region, Toscana Region, Calabria Region, University La Sapienza and Roma Tre of Rome, Local Health Services. At the international level it is worth mentioning the European Community, the Italian Cooperation for Development, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women - UN-Women (formerly UNIFEM), the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP. . Differenza Donna manages a wide range of anti-violence services, including shelters, and projects, partly supported by public funding.Since 2010 DD has been a member of WAVE - Women Against Violence Europe, the European network of women's non-governmental organizations working in the field of combating violence against women and children and promoting women’s human rights.In 2011 Differenza Donna was appointed as chair of D.I.Re. - Donne in Rete contro la violenza, the Italian network of anti-violence shelters and women’s organizations
