Mission statement:	CEDEM is one of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) involved in various categories of vulnerable children: children with disabilities, orphans, abused children, poor children and street children, including through a range of services and socio-educational projects. CEDEM actively campaigns in the areas of survival, protection, development and children's rights. Its main objective: improve children's quality of life. The aims of CEDEM is to: Provide Mauritian children a complete education that is not only academic knowledge but also life skills to make them responsible and useful citizens. Rehabilitate children in need and those who are most vulnerable. Make parents aware of their essential role in the education of children. Support families in difficulty. Train teachers, youth workers and social workers. Provide children of Mauritius with recreational opportunities primarily targeting the most disadvantaged areas of the island. CEDEM's services include: 1.Promoting early childhood development 2.Animation 3.Family counseling 4.Special schools for slow-learners and handicapped children 5.Training programmes for social workers, educators & parents 6.Youth committee 7.Providing shelters for children in distress 8.Publication of story books for children 9.Community development programmes 10.Respite care 11.Therapeutic sessions for sexually abused girls & other vulnerable groups 12.Fund raising 13.Educational trips to Rodrigues and Reunion islands for students 14.Foster caring 15.Sensitization campaign on child sexual abuse 16.Undertaking research projects 17.Transport facilities to and from school for handicapped children The 8 Principles Guiding CEDEM’s Actions We believe in: The Family The family is the ideal structure for promoting the rights, protection and welfare of any child. Education Education is a treasure and remains the most beautiful gift that can be given to any child. Pedagogy Pedagogy is the art of teaching and all the educators of CEDEM strive to become pedagogues. Militancy People working at CEDEM are human rights defenders. They are committed to militate for the protection and welfare of children. Training Training the staff members of CEDEM is an essential step for them to be efficient in their work with children. Professionalism Only people who aim at excellence can work at CEDEM Teamwork Quality educational interventions at CEDEM are not the result of one person’s work; they are planned and implemented by a team. Resource Management The quantity of a particular resource, may it be financial, human or material, is less important than its proper management.

Organizational structure:	The major decisions in the organisation are taken by its Management Committee. The Management Committee looks into the running, structure, philosophy and management of the staff of the organisation. The decisions taken by the Management Committee are implemented by the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee has the duty to report to the Management Committee. The organisation is headed by the Director, assisted by the Co-Director. Both report to the Executive Committee. Each department in the organisation has a Head of Department and they are assisted by another staff member.
Number and type of members:	The Management Committee Consists of 8 members including the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Assistant-Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant-Treasurer and two Board members. The Executive Committee is made up of 7 members including the Director, Co-Director, Manager, Social Worker, Psychologist and two Heads of Departments.
