    Year established:
    Year of registration: 1997
Organizational structure: The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) was established in March 1997, with a core mandate to promote and defend the rights and freedoms of the media, and to help expand the boundaries of freedom of speech and expression throughout West Africa. The establishment of the MFWA was the product of region-wide consultations involving many of West Africa’s leading media professionals and civil society organizations. The MFWA is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors, which includes the Executive Director. The Board has overall responsibility for the strategic direction, effectiveness, supervision and accountability of organisation. It is also responsible for reviewing and approving key documents of the organisation including strategic plans, annual work plans and budgets. It is also responsible for the appointment of auditors, conducting annual performance reviews, among others. The operation of the Board is guided by a Board Charter. The members on the Board consist of accomplished and respected professionals with different backgrounds of expertise. The membership of the Board is representative for the West African region in terms of gender, language and nationality. The organisation operates from Accra, Ghana. The day-to-day management of the organisation is led by the Executive Director and supported by programme managers and a finance manager. In total, the MFWA has full-time staff strength of 26. The MFWA works with and through national partner organisations, media associations, and a network of free expression rights monitors located in each of the 16 countries of the region. The organisation also works with a network of human rights lawyers, who offer first-hand legal defense and/or assistance to journalists whose rights are arbitrarily violated and those facing arbitrary prosecutions for doing their work.
Affiliation with NGO networks: The MFWA is a member of IFEX, Africa Freedom of Information Centre, Africa Platform on Access to Information, and serve as secretariat for Africa Freedom of Expression Exchange.
