Organizational structure: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Distance Education for Africa (DeAfrica) is an educational organization based in Nairobi, Kenya. Founded in 2011 by Sidiki Traore, previously West African Regional head in Dakar of the World Bank’s distance learning efforts in Africa, the objective of DeAfrica is to alleviate poverty by improving access to efficient and effective world-class training and education courses by poor communities in Africa. DeAfrica serves as a content broker, bringing content from one university to another, as well as providing courses directly to students not enrolled in universities. By providing technology, pedagogical experience and methodologies, as well as up-to-date content, DeAfrica extends quality education to people who would not otherwise have access to any educational resources. DeAfrica courses reach urban and rural areas, dropout students, and disadvantaged students across Africa. In this way, it helps reduce the brain drain from Africa while creating awareness about new teaching methods and learning methods. DeAfrica upgrades the skills of professionals and students in Africa who cannot afford to go abroad. DEA opens a “window to the world” for students and professionals, while providing networking opportunities between students and lecturers, and the opportunity for interaction for students and professionals from various African countries.
