Mission statement:	Contribute forensic expertise to the investigation of human rights violations and infractions to the international humanitarian law, to prevent human rights abuses, seek truth and justice and contribute to peace building in Colombia EQUITAS is a non-profit organisation that was founded in 2004 to respond to the need for an independent forensic team that investigates serious violations of human rights in Colombia. For more than 10 years, EQUITAS has brought together a range of basic, social and forensic methodologies for the development of innovative strategies that contribute to identifying the complexity and magnitude of the armed conflict and socio-political violence, address in an integrated manner the investigation of serious violations of human rights and International Humanitarian Law and impact on the institutional transformations that are necessary to guarantee the rights of victims to truth, justice and reparations. For Equitas, “forensic” work involves an integrated action perspective that aims to support criminal investigations and make structural contributions to the investigation of violations of human rights and infractions of International Humanitarian Law. This involves: · Responding to the expectations of victim survivors and the preservation of their memory in a society that is transitioning following an armed conflict; · Understanding how these violations have affected and transformed communities and how forensic science can help to rebuild the social fabric. · Preventing future violations through contributions in the formulation of public policies to provide assistance to victims, criminal investigations, and other actions.
