  • Mission statement:
    Year established:
    Year of registration: 1988
Organizational structure: IAS Governing Council (GC) Every 2 years, IAS members from each of 5 the regions nominate members to serve a term of 4 years on the IAS GC. The next President and Treasurer are 1st elected amongst and by the members of the GC. Elections are held electronically amongst members within each region to fill the vacant seats on the GC. The 5 regions are USA and Canada, Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia and the Pacific Islands. The IAS Secretariat, with direction from the GC implements the work of the IAS. As the largest independent global association of HIV/AIDS professionals and custodian of the world’s two largest AIDS conferences, the International AIDS Conference and the IAS Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention Conference,IAS brings together and link individuals working in diverse disciplines and settings, separated by geography, culture, language and resource levels, and to leverage their expertise and knowledge in an effective, sustained global response to the epidemic. At its November 2010 retreat in Geneva, the IAS GC reviewed past and ongoing IAS policy advocacy work in light of the overall HIV/AIDS response. Based on major reports released by leading actors such as UNAIDS and WHO and embedded in the IAS’s current strategic plan, the GC agreed on priority areas for 2011 and 2012 using several criteria, including the contribution and leadership role that the IAS can play, the expertise and experience in the IAS and the profile of its membership, the use of IAS conferences and the likelihood of securing funding. The IAS will play a leadership role in four areas: • HIV cure with focus on global scientific strategy and a consortium • drug policies with focus on opioid substitution therapy (OST) • social and political sciences with focus on and around the IAS’s international conferences on HIV and AIDS • human rights with focus on HIV professionals and key vulnerable populations. IAS will work through partnerships and representation in other key areas. The IAS plans to aim higher into political leadership accountability including the G8, regional political bodies like SADC, African Union, NEPAD, EU, etc. The process will entail recording and tracking their pledges, commitments and progress in delivering official strategic frameworks. With a strong team of committed professionals in the Geneva office managing this work, in collaboration with Regional Partners, and strategic collaborations with UN agencies, private foundations, industry, community-based networks, PLHIV, and the International AIDS Conference/ the IAS Conference on Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention, the IAS has supported a large number of activities aimed at influencing the global agenda.
