Organizational structure: With over 60 years of shared history to draw on, Age Concern NI and Help the Aged in NI joined together in April 2009 to create a powerful new voice for older people. The two legacy charities cared for many, campaigned for change, and created vital products and services. In the last year, with the support of our partners and stakeholders we made a positive impact on 158,000 older people. If those experiences made one thing clear, it’s that there is strength in numbers which is why Age Concern NI and Help the Aged in Northern Ireland became one – Age NI. We deliver care services, provide advice and advocacy, fundraise and influence our decision-makers to improve later life for us all. We provide advice and care During the past year Age NI has provided a range of vital services for older people: • First Connect: provides emotional support and opportunities for 500 older people to access services and to maintain life independence • Advice and Advocacy: specialist local advisors providing information, advice and practical support on issues such as welfare benefits, community care, housing and health to over 15,000 callers a year • Direct Care: provides person-centred residential care, day care and domiciliary care to over 2,000 clients daily including specialist support for older people with dementia. We support local groups Through joint working with older people’s groups, we aim to strengthen the voice and the influence of older people in their communities by building eleven strong age sector networks throughout Northern Ireland. These groups are at the front-line delivering various practical services and creating important social contact opportunities. We campaign and influence policy Age NI educates, campaigns and lobbies the NI Executive, the NI Assembly and Government Authorities to ensure that older people’s issues are represented at the highest level. Our policy team is challenging government to tackle the barriers of poverty, discrimination and to improve health & social care provision. Recent campaigns include working with our partners in the age sector to successfully secure 80,000 additional fuel payments (worth £12.5 million) for older people and ongoing lobbying for an Older People’s Commissioner.
