Mission statement:
Promotion of Eco-tourism In line with current trends, the Society promotes ecotourism through a number of wildlife camps including the Wildlife Camp in South Luangwa National Park, Kafwala and Chibila Camps in Kafue National Park and Chembe Bird Sanctuary in the Copperbelt. The Society¿s contribution to the promotion of environmental education and awareness is based on a relationship that it maintains with government. Co-operation with national agencies also allows the Society to support initiatives in wildlife protection, research, and community based natural resource management. Practical Conservation As a tool for environmental education and rehabilitation, the Society facilitates tree planting projects, clean-ups, promotes local tourism through visits to National Parks and promotes awareness with the relevant institutions and the public. The Society also actively seeks to get engaged in supporting wildlife research, environmental monitoring and practical conservation, as well as awareness campaigns, advocacy, lobbying and training for environmental educators from schools and other relevant organisations. Policy Formulation The Society is actively involved in policy formulation processes for the government and the line ministries. Notable ones include the Zambia Biological Diversity Strategy and Action Plan, the Zambia Wetlands Strategy and Action Plan, the Water bill and the National Policy on Environment. The Society holds membership to the Board of the Environmental Council of Zambia and the Zambia Civil Society Climate Change Network, the Natural Resource Consultative Forum and National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) under the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and natural resources. WECSZ also works with a variety of local private sector organisations with whom we continue to discuss ways of enhancing our contribution to environmental work. The WECSZ is planning to undertake different conservation activities, such as tree planting, removal of alien invasive plant species, environmental research, monitoring for illegal logging and poaching, Undertaking an assessment on climate change in all the nine provinces of Zambia, including climate Change adaptation and mitigation activities, -which could be through plastic recycling, Reforestation and advocacy on the wise use of our natural resources and taking children and teachers/club leaders on educational tours to places of environmental importance. The extent of these conservation activities does though depend on the available funding. the Society seeks to widen its environmental education outreach Programme into every district of Zambia. The aim is to build capacity at grass root for effective delivery of environmental education, but with a strong emphasis on improving the quality of the product and particularly the outreach footprint (number of schools and members countrywide).
