Social Development

Affiliation with other organizations: ASN has partnerships with many international organizations including the Canadian Nutrition Society, Chinese Nutrition Society, Korean Nutrition Society, UK Nutrition Society, and the Turkish Diabetes Foundation and Center for Diabetes Education. ASN often organizes and co-sponsors joint meetings with these organizations. Examples of joint meetings include: • ASN partnered with The Nutrition Society Irish Section to conduct a program titled “Vitamins in Early Development and Healthy Aging: Impact on Infectious and Chronic Disease” in June 2011 in Cork, Ireland. More than 250 delegates from the UK, Ireland, North America, and mainland Europe participated. • In February 2012, ASN is partnering with the Egyptian Diabetes Center’s Center for Diabetes Education and the Turkish Diabetes Foundation on the inaugural “Middle East Congress: Nutrition in Health and Disease.” • ASN’s International Nutrition Council is co-sponsoring a symposium with the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP) in November 2012 in Peru. The title of this session is “Dietary and physical activity behavior change through mobile technology for prevention of cardiovascular disease.”
Publications: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) is the highest ranked peer-reviewed journal in nutrition and dietetics. In publication since 1952, AJCN publishes the latest findings in basic and clinical studies relevant to human nutrition. AJCN was selected by the Special Libraries Association (SLA) as one of the top 100 most influential journals in Biology and Medicine over the last 100 years. AJCN is an important resource for researchers and practitioners in the field of clinical nutrition. The Journal of Nutrition (JN), published since 1928, was the first journal dedicated to publishing original, peer-reviewed research in all areas of nutrition. JN provides the latest research on a broad spectrum of topics of vital interest to researchers, students, policymakers and all individuals with interests in nutrition. Advances in Nutrition, in publication since 2010, publishes review articles that highlight the significance of recent research in nutrition and illustrate the central role of nutrition in the promotion of health and prevention of disease.
Purpose of the organization: ASN is dedicated to bringing together the world’s top nutrition research scientists to advance our knowledge and application of nutrition.
Description of the membership of the organization, indicating the total number of members: ASN has more than 5,000 individual members in more than 60 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East, South America, and the United States. ASN members are nutrition scientists and researchers working throughout academia, clinical practice, government, and industry.
