Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Legal and Advocacy Service

View Additional Information

Social Development

Accreditation to: Indigenous Forum
Affiliation with other organizations: The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Women¿s Legal and Advocacy Service is a community based Non-Government Organisation, we are community controlled and managed by a board of Indigenous women. We are based in Brisbane in the State of Queensland. We provide a legal and advocacy service to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in the greater Brisbane area. The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Women¿s Legal and Advocacy Service was formed because it was recognized that: historically the legal system has failed to recognize and accommodate traditional laws of indigenous Australians; furthermore, Indigenous women have been disadvantaged because providers of legal services do not recognize the intersections of disadvantage faced by indigenous women such as racism, violence, colonization, poverty, and sexism.
