Mission statement:	The BARKA Foundation is a UN-affiliated NGO established in January, 2006. Its mission is to serve as a catalyst for achieving the Millennium Development Goals in Burkina Faso, considered to be the 3rd poorest country in the world. BARKA is spearheading the BARKA Burkina Consortium, an international collaborative effort to uncover a new approach toward poverty eradication and MDG satisfaction. Its methodology is community-led, grassroots and combines indigenous and modern technologies to develop a set of best practices in areas of clean water accessibility, sanitation, irrigation, sustainable agriculture, women's empowerment, education, healthcare, and renewable energy. BARKA’s work is ultimately about co-creating a culture of peace. One concrete example is through building bridges between communities in the US and villages in Burkina by connecting schools, youth groups, women's associations, faith-based organizations, businesses, artists and civic leaders in order for our gifts to be shared with each other. In 2009 BARKA premiered its 1st feature-length documentary film, conducted a 500-mile Walk for Water from the UN to Maine, and produced the 1st Peace, Water & Wisdom Concert & Festival in Ouagadougou, an annual fundraiser for clean water initiatives of the BARKA Burkina Consortium. ‘Barka’ is an African word of gratitude, blessing and reciprocity.

Organizational structure:	The 5-person Board of directors, which meet at least ten times annually, and the executive committee govern the actions and decisions of the organization. The Board and executive committee, as necessary, creates committees. A President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and other officers are elected/appointed by the Board at the organization’s annual meeting.
