Indalo Yethu is a legacy project of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development that was held in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is aimed at mobilising the country around environmental and sustainability issues. These include climate change, conservation, the green economy, jobs and skills as well as environmental justice. The agency was officially launched in 2006 as an independent trust of the Department of Environmental Affairs.

The Building Energy Auditor Training (BEAT) programme conceptualised by Indalo Yethu to involve youth in the national energy efficiency and demand side management efforts.
