Organizational structure: Occupy Earth Summit is organized in a horizontal structure. There is no one leader per se; everyone who is a part of Occupy Earth Summit is a leader and shares power equally with all other members. There is no hierarchy. We are also basing our organizational structure on the BetterMeans model (bettermeans.com). As BetterMeans describes on their website, “No more pyramids, job titles or direct reports. Everyone is a member, and every member gets an equal binding vote. When people first join they are contributors. Votes are recorded, but are non-binding. This way, teams can get a sense of the crowd’s voice but ultimately the team members drive the direction of the project. Contributors are nominated to be members, and are voted in by the core team. The core team is a subset of the members who can vote in new members. Anyone can be nominated to any level in an open enterprise, and everyone is accountable to each other. The result is a healthy and dynamic hierarchy replaces the rigid proscribed one.” Following the above model, we have designated several positions of responsibility within the group. The positions thus far are: -Outreach to different countries, -Outreach to youth and college campuses/students, -Tech person in charge of our website (occupytheearth.net), -Scribe -Environmental Outreach -Economic Affairs -Group Spokesperson On a meta-level, Occupy is a gathering of people committed to making decisions based upon a collective agreement or “consensus.” There is no single leader or governing body of Occupy – everyone’s voice is equal. Anyone is free to propose an idea or express an opinion as part of the group. Each proposal follows the same basic format – an individual shares what is being proposed, why it is being proposed, and, if there is enough agreement, how it can be carried out. If there is positive consensus for a proposal – meaning no outright opposition – then it is accepted and direct action begins. If there is not consensus, the responsible group or individual is asked to revise the proposal and submit again until a majority consensus is achieved.
Number and type of members: There are 10 core members of Occupy Earth Summit and another 10-15 peripheral members who attend when they can. Occupy Earth Summit is only one working group in the larger #occupy body, however, and there are no accurate number of worldwide occupiers. We only have one type of member: occupier. As we stated above in the "Organizational Structure", each member has the same status and is able to participate in group decisions and projects as they choose. We welcome new members openly and are excited to include them in any and all activities.
