Mission statement:	The Latin American Center on Human Rights (CLADH, for its initials in Spanish) is a Non-Governmental Organization that works on promoting and protecting human rights throughout Latin America, seeking to create a culture of unrestricted respect of people's fundamental rights. Democracy suffered the attack of military dictatorship regimes during the 1970s and 80s in Latin American countries. In this period, the military regimes were characterized by lack of transparency and destruction of institutions of control. During the 1990s Latin America witnessed the birth of a strong movement in civil society to defend democracy and human rights. Despite the fact that there have been many achievements in these issues, there are many groups that still are being deprived of their human rights. The experiences of totalitarianism in the world, particularly in Latin American countries, have only increased the general conviction that the respect of human rights is the only guarantee of peace. However, much has to be done. The CLADH works hard towards a world in which everyone's rights will be respected. The aims and purposes of the Latin American Center for Human Rights are based on humanist values such as freedom, equality and human dignity; and they are: 1. to promote and protect basic human rights in Latin American countries, drawing attention to abuses which contravene internationally accepted standards of behavior; 2. to call for greater protection of the basic rights of the vulnerable, especially women and children; 3. to call upon nations to fulfill their obligations under United Nations’ conventions and Inter-American covenants to which they are signatories; 4. to guarantee the fundamental freedoms; 5. to promote a fair and humanitarian treatment of people imprisoned, emphasizing the need to protect their rights, and to deplore the abuse of basic human rights; 6. to promote social awareness on the importance of human rights; 7. to promote new legislation in countries where it is needed to adjust domestic laws to international human rights standards; 8. to research abuses and publish studies on specific topics; 9. to prevent discrimination and grave abuses of human rights; 10. to organize and participate in conferences that focuses on human rights issues; 11. to meet with representatives of governments, academic institutions, non-governmental organizations; and to discuss human rights issues in order to help promote them; 12. to enter into dialogue with politicians and policy makers to bring more attention to human rights topics; 13. to make recommendations to every Nation, specially Latin American countries, and help them promote the respect of human rights; 14. to litigate at national and international level denouncing human rights violations in Latin American countries, thus obtaining justice in individual cases; 15. to conduct research and advocacy on human rights matters.

Organizational structure:	The structure of CLADH is conformed by two bodies. The main one is the Administration Board, composed by the President, the Vice-President, the Secretary and the Treasurer. The Board Members meet in ordinary session and in extraordinary session. Decisions are made by the majority. Below the Administration Board there is the executive body, headed by the executive director of each country and its staff. Besides these two bodies, there is a group of volunteers that collaborates with some CLADH activities.
