Mission statement:
Pop Culture Hero Coalition works to educate and support children and teens through teaching mental health, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and the prevention of fascism, bigotry, and bullying in all its forms, including: • Racism • Misogyny • LGBTQI+bullying • Cyberbullying • Discrimination • Inequality The Coalition’s work is for the purpose of creating and supporting: • Mental health, which leads to the physical, emotional, and psychological safety for children, teens, women, LGBTQI-people, and people of all backgrounds, socio-economic status, genders, races, and religious affiliations. • Lifelong social, emotional, and communication skills, which are crucial for peaceful conflict resolution • Support of women • Support of the girl child • Support of Men and boys • Healthy identity, particularly in impoverished areas and underinvested communities • Positive peer relationships • Educational achievement • Healthy nutrition • Early Childhood training for parents and caregivers • Crucial Early Childhood care for ages 0-3, particularly for impoverished areas Created by a team of renowned psychologists and award-winning educators, our innovative, comprehensive, 32-lesson plan Heroic Journey Curriculum uses stories and characters from pop culture, which children and teens find relatable and accessible, to transform their struggles into strengths. In 2018, we provided The Heroic Journey to Golden Dragon, an NGO working with human trafficking victims in Viet Nam. Golden Dragon is extremely enthusiastic on the efficacy of our mental health tools. In 2019, the UNESCO school in Vienna, Austria, successfully piloted The Heroic Journey Curriculum for Middle Schools. Since 2013, we have implemented programs youth conventions, featuring guests from the United Nations, including UNDP Team Leader Charles Chauvel and United Nations Association President Bettina Hausmann. This work ignites passion in young people for the work of the United Nations and the SDGs. In 2019, we created and distributed our original mental health comic book for children’s hospitals, helping children with cancer and other serious illness navigate anxiety, depression, loneliness, and fear. In 2019, we also created Never Alone, an LGBTQIA+ mental health support comic book for youth. We have given 9000 copies to LGBTQIA+ centers — free of charge — during the pandemic. Additionally, we have created H.E.R.O.I.C.: Healing, Empathy, and Resilience for Orthopedically Impaired Children, which is run by a man paralyzed by cerebral palsy. H.E.R.O.I.C. teaches children with disabilities to overcome barriers, as well as teaching empathy to their peers. At the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, our Heroic Journey at Home was created in four languages to be available — internationally and free of charge — on our website for children, teens, and parents in isolation during COVID-19. It is available in English, Spanish, German, and Italian. In 2020, YMCA of the USA chose our Heroic Journey Curriculum to be piloted in 160 locations. The pilot has been successful, and our work is scheduled to go nationwide. YMCA has also commissioned the Coalition team to create an additional series of videos and lessons to teach nutritional health and physical wellness to children and parents. This program is due to be complete in December 2022. We have most recently begun creating an Early Childhood / Caregiver Development Program, which will pilot in January 2023, under the Created and Directed by Dr. Fran Hurley, who has created similar programming for UNESCO; Dr. Hurley consults on Child Development for the World Bank. In June, 2022, The Heroic Journey Mental Health Curriculum, created by our team of psychologists and educators, will be available to all 10,000 locations of YMCA of the USA. Please note: The specify areas above were not working when we tried to specify our activities.
