IIASA is an international, independent, not-for-profit, research organization supported by a consortium of National Member Organizations (NMOs)in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe & Oceania. NMOs are organizations that must be representative of the scientific community of a country and be able to meet the financial obligations of membership. Comprised of NMO delegates, the governing body of the Institute is the IIASA Council who set the broad research themes. The Council is supported by an external international Scientific Advisory Committee. Appointed by the Council, the CEO of the Institute is the IIASA Director General and Chief Executive Officer (Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat)with a Deputy Director General/Deputy CEO (Professor Nebojsa Nakicenovic) supported by an Internal Research Committee comprised of IIASA senior scientists, and a Management Support Team. Since 2011, IIASA's research addresses three global problem areas: Energy and Climate change; Food and Water; and Poverty and Equity. Within these areas are Programs that define the major research activities. These are relatively stable designations and comprise the research topics for which IIASA is known: energy, climate change, forestry, land-use, population, technology, air pollution, risk, methodology development, etc. Each Program is led by a senior scholar reporting to the Director. There are also six administrative support departments, e.g., Human Resources, Sponsored Research, Finance, Communications, Library, and Information Technology, whose Heads also report to the Director. In 2016, 348 researchers from 50 countries worked at IIASA, 2,229 collaborators visited the institute, and around 25% of alumni were actively involved in its work.Together, they made up a global network of over 3,500 scholars and over 720 partner institutions. |
