Mission statement:
Mission To be the voice of the road infrastructure industry. IRF accomplishes this by: (a) furthering the user-oriented development and management of road networks worldwide, while improving their safety, efficiency, financial sustainability and environmental performance; (b) striving to improve understanding of the road infrastructure industry among decision makers; (c) endeavouring to increase public awareness of the social, economic and environmental benefits of sustainable road networks; (d) promoting and providing training and education of decision makers and practitioners in the development, funding, planning, design, construction, maintenance, operation, and management of road transport systems and networks; (e) encouraging participation in its activities by exchanging knowledge and fostering cooperation with intergovernmental, international, regional, national and local organisations having similar or complementary objectives; (f) advising and assisting governmental agencies in their road infrastructure policy making, supporting the establishment of road associations in countries where they do not yet exist; (g) collecting, collating, drafting and distributing relevant statistical, technical, economic, educational and other knowledge material pertaining to the improvement of road systems and networks; (h) stimulating and supporting the regional and global harmonisation of standards in road infrastructure; (i) supporting research, knowledge sharing and capacity building aimed at the development of well designed, safe, efficient, financially sound, user-oriented, technologically appropriate and environmentally sustainable road networks; (j) promoting the concept of ‘forgiving roads’ as an effective means of reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries, encouraging the application of universal road safety standards and guidelines; (k) fostering the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS); (l) voicing the need for sustainable financing and funding for roads and providing good practice for sound financing of road systems; (m) promoting environmental impact assessment of road construction and maintenance projects and providing good practice for environmentally friendly practices.
