Mission statement:
CDVTA mission is to help the poorest older people living in the poorest under-represented disadvantaged communities achieve lasting changes in their lives. In this respect, CDVTA workS to create integrated communities, where very poor and starving older people and their HIV/Aids affected grand children can lead meaningful and satisfactory lives, with dignity. CDVTA workS with communities and groups that share her vision, of a society where oppressed older people, disabled and children are able to exercise their human rights and gain access to freedom. The aim of CDVTA is to improve the lives of the poorest older people in the poorest rural communities of Cameroon in West Africa. This holistic project seeks to use a rights-based approach to both address the self-identified needs of marginalized older people and create lasting changes at structural level. CDVTA work outcomes are expected to be: 1) SOCIAL INCLUSION: Older people are empowered to feel more included and cared for by the community, through active club membership, regular home-visits by volunteers, inter-generational learning and sharing with local school children, and integration with their families. Awareness raising on issues of community-wide importance (e.g. HIV/AIDS, environment and gender) aim to change attitudes and reinforce integration. 2) RIGHTS: Older people are actively participating in the formulation and implementation of policies that directly affect their rights. Through increased civic education, including supporting those who can't vote to obtain identification papers. CDVTA empowers older people especially women and widows, to claim and advocate for their rights. While influencing opinion amongst their communities and local leaders, older people are also encouraged to use their vote and attendance at advocacy forums to influence the Government of Cameroon (GoC) to uphold their rights through legislation. 3) LIVELIHOODS: Older people gain increased well-being and economic empowerment: they are empowered with improved techniques in organic farming and new skills in livestock rearing, beekeeping, soap making and medicinal plant production. This supports individual older people and their clubs to increase their yields and their incomes. They receive training in financial management to improve their skills in marketing and bookkeeping, which enables group members to better manage their businesses, micro-credit loan and savings schemes. 4) WELFARE: This aspect helps older people to attain improved standards of living: Many of the primary stakeholders in this area are not only economically poor but also frail, disabled and/or housebound. By working with the community to raise awareness about improved nutrition, hygiene and sanitation, environmental and gender issues, and by improving water sources, CDVTA helps to raise living standards in areas where no other government or NGO support exists. CDVTA also promotes volunteering by family members and young people, who provide assistance in personal hygiene, household chores and the repair of dilapidated homes. CDVTA work is directly benefiting over 850.000 older people in Cameroon with 60% of them women.
