The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is lead by a Chief and four Vice Chiefs. The Chief and Vice Chiefs are elected every three years in a duly convened election with proportional representation voting. Currently the Chief is Perry Bellegarde and the next election for Chief will be held in October 2014. In accordance with FSIN policies, the Chief is the official spokesperson and representative for international and national issues, meetings and forums. The duly elected Chief also serves as the Saskatchewan Regional Chief for the Assembly of First Nations which also has UN ECOSOC consultative status. |
Number and type of members: |
The FSIN has 74 member First Nations within what is now the Province of Saskatchewan in Canada. Each of the 74 First Nations is duly recognized by the Government of Canada as a First Nation or 'Indian Band' under the Indian Act, the federal piece of legislation which currently governs 'Indians' in Canada. The duly elected Chiefs and Councillors along with other selected voters selected in accordance with the First Nations' policies and the respective First Nations population vote in the FSIN's elections for the Chief and four Vice Chief positions. |
